Like everything else, kids are more expensive - $286,050 from birth through age 17. That's according to a Fiscal Times report based on the Department of Agriculture's 2009 data for a middle-income, husband-and-wife family with 2 children. The largest percentage of the money 31% - is spent on housing. The next 3 most costly expenditures are childcare and education 17%, food 16% and transportation 13%. The final 3 expenditures are miscellaneous 9%, health care 8% and clothing 6%. One would think a pie chart showing these numbers would be an inexpensive form of birth control.

Many of kids' food preferences come from their mothers. The foods pregnant women eat get into both the amniotic fluid and the breast milk, flavoring them. When babies get old enough to eat solid foods, they show a preference for flavors experienced in the womb or from nursing. However, the amount of salt a mother eats doesn't affect the saltiness of amniotic fluid or breast milk. It's feeding babies starchy table foods high in salt that leads to children having a higher preference for salt. From the beginning it's not what parents say, it's what they do.

Kids who had the greatest self-control as preschoolers were much likelier to have fewer health problems in their 30's. That was the finding of a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers also studied 1,000 New Zealanders from birth in 1972 and 1973 until age 32. Children who struggled with self-control as preschoolers were 3 times more likely to have problems as young adults. They were likelier to have a criminal record, be poor or have financial problems and be single parents. The good news is self- control can be taught in "control groups".

In spite of all the problems that come with kids, the German government doesn't think there are enough kids in Germany. In 2005 Germany had the lowest birth rate in Europe with 8.5 births per 1,000 inhabitants. In 2011, in an attempt to encourage Germans to have more children, the government proposed a bill allowing citizens under age 6 to laugh, shout and play at any volume. Germany has many laws regarding noise. For example, construction sites have to be idle at midday and no lawn mowing is allowed on Sundays. However, when a seniors group wanted to ban kindergartens in residential areas, the German government started "making noise".
