An Update on Teeth-Whitening Options

An Update on Teeth-Whitening Options

If you have not yet whitened your teeth, you probably know people who have. It is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures and has been given lots of media exposure. The supermarkets and drug stores are overflowing with store-bought products claiming to whiten your teeth and some of them work to some extent.

But if you want bright, even, and consistent results, the best route is through your cosmetic dentist's office. Even if you would prefer to whiten your own teeth at home, at your leisure, and with less expense, it is still worthwhile to get your take-home kit from a good dentist because you need custom-fitted trays. The store-bought kits have generic trays that will surely not fit your teeth well. That means the whitening gel will leak out of them here and there, giving you inconsistent results, and you will probably swallow some of it.

The Zoom2 Chairside Whitening System

One of the most popular in-office whitening systems has been the Zoom! system. The company has recently been marketing the Zoom2 Chairside Whitening System which offers some improvements. The whitening gel is reformulated to give less tooth sensitivity and the activating light has been re-engineered.

Instead of taking a full hour as the Zoom! procedure did, Zoom2 takes just 45 minutes. It applies less heat to your mouth, keeping you more comfortable. There is also a follow-up kit that you can take home for later touch-ups. The office treatment can whiten your teeth by eight shades and perhaps at home you could whiten them even more with the follow-up kit.

Deep Bleaching

If your teeth have relatively deep stains and other teeth whitening methods have not worked for you, Deep Bleaching is an excellent option. By using two different whitening agents and taking two weeks for final results, this system can reach stains as far into the tooth as the dentin layer, beneath the enamel. It can even remove stains that were laid down while your teeth developed during childhood.

Deep Bleaching starts as an in-office procedure using hydrogen peroxide; then at home, you wear custom-made trays each night, using carbamide peroxide. After two weeks, you return to your cosmetic dentist's office for a final treatment using hydrogen peroxide. This approach has the effect of brightening your teeth by 16 shades a very dramatic result indeed, especially if you have had deeply stained teeth for years.

Teeth whitening must be done carefully, with protection for your gums, lips, and tongue, and filtering glasses for protection against the light. You would not want to trust any corner dentist for this, since, without proper protection, you might have sore and peeling gums afterwards.
