Along The Path To Liberty On Boston's Freedom Trail

Along The Path To Liberty On Boston's Freedom Trail

Adjective-heavy for its monumental past in the quest for democracy

, Boston is not only home of the Red Socks but the cradle of freedom and the birthplace of American democracy, what Athens was to Greece. Despite its moderate size this culturally significant town well-deserved its hefty titles due to its rich heritage. Renowned for its architectural wonders and a famed college town, Boston is still very much a pioneer that sets the tone of progress for the rest of the states.

Home to some of the worlds most prestigious universities, Boston was also known by its Puritan ancestors as the shining city on a hill as it was the birthplace of the Sons of Freedom and the site of the War for Independence. Having pushed forward progressive notions such as feminism, transcendentalism and abolitionism, a trip to this magnificent city would be incomplete if one did not traverse along those first steps towards freedom along Bostons Freedom Trail.

Taking visitors along a 2.5mile stretch of a red-brick walking tour that covers sixteen historic sites related to the American Revolution, the Freedom Trail traces the worlds leading nations struggle for independence from Britain. The major sites that are visited on the trail include the The State House, Common, Faneuil Park, Paul Revere House, Kings Chapel and the Site of the Boston Massacre in addition to Benjamin Franklin Statue/Boston Latin School, Granary Burying Ground, the Bunker Hill Monument, Old South Meeting House, Copp's Hill Burying Ground, Old Corner Book Store ,Old State House, The Constitution and the Kings Chapel Burying Ground.

Some of the tour highlights include the State House which was built in 1798 by designer Charles Bulfinch on what used to be John Hancock's cow grazing land. Iconic for its gold shaded dome which was first covered in 23 karat gold leaves in 1874 was painted black during the Second World War to shield it from shelling attacks. Sprawled across 6.7 acres of prime parkland the State House is one of the oldest residents of Beacon Hill.Along The Path To Liberty On Boston's Freedom Trail

Paul Reveres house is another must see as its the oldest completely intact construct in downtown Boston. Purchased for a little over 53 pounds in 1770, Revere was residing in this country house when he set out on that fateful journey towards Lexington that is immortalized in the Longfellow poem Paul Reveres Ride. It is also interesting to note that the residence housed Jewish, Italian and Irish immigrants in the 19th century.

As the site of the first key battle of the American Revolutionary War, Bunker Hill saw the American revolutionaries inflict 1000 casualties on the British forces which inspired General Nathanael Greenes famous words I wish I could sell them another hill at the same price. With the placement of the cornerstone of the monument in 1825 by veteran Marquis De Lafayette, the towering 221 foot high granite obelisk is a testament to the revolutionary spirit of the colonial forces in its heyday. The tour also takes you though the sequence of event leading up to the Battle of Bunker Hill while the Bunker Hill Museum is also featured with its collection of artefacts from that red letter day in American history.
