Shiva,one of the holy Trinity is an existing God. The holy and the ancient book of India, the Rig-Veda remind his existence in its mantras. Tales has it that Shiva narrated to Parvati the top secret of formation in a Cave in Amarnath. Unknown to them a couple of mating doves were listening to this discussion and having learned about the secret have taken birth repeatedly and have made the cave their everlasting dwelling.
As per an ancient tale, there was on one occasion a Muslim Shepherd by the name of Buta Malik and he was handed over a bag of coal by a sadhu. When he reached home he found that the bag contained good solid gold. He was very happy and ran towards the place where that Sadhu gave him that bag.On reaching that place he found that there was a cave and ultimately this cave became a place of pilgrimage for all devotees.Till day a small fraction of the donations are given to the descendents of Malik, and the left over to trust which run the shrine.
Another tale is that when Kashyap Rishi exhausted the Kashmir valley of water the cave and lingam were found by Bregeish Rishi who was wandering in the Himalays. When numerous people came to know about the lingam Amarnath for since then became Shiva's dwelling and a place of pilgrimage Hindus.
Reaching Amarnathji From Pahalgam
Positioned in a tapered canyon at the end of Lidder valley, Amarnath is at the altitude of 3898 mtrs and is about 50 Kms from Pahalgam and 144 Kms from Srinagar. Though the local people advise that journey to Amarnathtji be commenced from Srinagar , the more general practice is to start journey from Chandanwari and travel the distance to Amarnath and get back in 5 days. Pahalgam is 100 Kms from Srinagar.
On the first day the travelers have to cover a distance of 12 Kms from Chandanwari and is through amazing primitive scenery and the main attraction is Sheshnag a mountain which draw its name from seven peaks similar to the head of mythical snake
On the second day 12 km journey gradually gains height zigzaging across Mahagunas Pass at 4610 mtrs and then going downward to the pasture land of Panchtarni the last camp stay to Amarnath Cave.
Panchtarni is just 5-6 kms away from Amarnath and and if you commence your trip early in the morning you can avoid the long queue which awaits you at the entrance of the cave.
Reaching Amarnathji From Baltal
Another very good way of reaching this holy place of Amarnathji is from Sonamarg via Baltal and this is at the altitude of 3000 mtrs. . Sonamarg is placed on Srinagar-Leh road north east from Srinagar. Nearly 16 kms from Sonemarg is Baltal which is pleasant little valley placed in the foothills of Zojila Pass. The holy place is just a days journey from Baltal.
