The anti-histamine here is Fexofenadine and the decongestant is Pseudoephidrine. Allegra acts in two ways by blocking the histamine and hence preventing allergic reactions and also by preventing decongestion.
This is one of the few antihistamine drugs which do not cause sedation. Allegra is available in the form of tablets and it is a prescription drug which is taken orally. This drug is taken to relieve stuffiness of the nose, runny nose, sneezing caused due to common cold. Apart from that it is also used in the treatment to relieve nasal and non nasal symptoms of allergies and seasonal allergic conditions like seasonal allergic rhinitis. Allegra is the choice of drug for bronchitis, pharyngitis and inflamed sinuses.
The dosage and usage should be taken as prescribed by the doctor. The dosage varies from case to case and therefore this medication should not be shared. Allegra is not recommended for nursing mothers. This drug is not recommended for children below the age of 12 years.
This medication is taken on an empty stomach one or two hours before taking meals. On a full stomach the efficiency in absorption is affected and hence it is to be taken on an empty stomach. The known side effects are nausea, headache, dizziness, stomach upset and nervousness may be seen. It is extremely important to inform the doctor in case of any side effects and allergies.
