Clarinex is the trade name of the Desloratadine, which is used in treating symptoms caused due to histamine. Histamine is a chemical substance present in the body which are stored in the histamine storage cells also known as the mast cells. When these are released from the mast cells they give rise to allergic manifestations like itchy eyes, running nose, sneezing and swelling of the mucosa of the nose etc.
What Clarinex does is that it blocks the receptors to which the histamine attaches itself on the cells. These receptors are called the H1 receptors. Once these receptors are blocked the cell is not activated and hence no allergic conditions are seen. Clarinex belongs to the family of non sedating anti-histamines. This is a prescription drug and needs to be taken as per the physician's prescription.
Clarinex is available in the form of tablets and syrup. This drug is used in the treatment of chronic urticaria and allergies. Clarinex is not recommended for children below the age of 12 years. This drug is also not recommended for nursing mothers also.
The most commonly seen side effects are dry mouth, sleeplessness, weakness and sore throat. The doctor must be informed in case one experiences any other side effects.
