Alice In Wonderland 2010, An Honest Review
As far as Childrens DVDs go, this is a great childrens movie where nineteen year
old Alice returns to the wonderland after convincing herself that her original visit at the age of six, was just a dream. There were varying reviews on this film, some say it is bad and nothing like the first (remember it was not meant to be) and some say it's a brilliant addition to the popular Lewis Carroll publications.
We feel that this movie is a good blend of the two well-known books, "Alice in Wonderland" and "Alice through the Looking Glass". We did enjoy most of the film, although for grown ups, it may be a bit of a let-down when compared with the original publications. Having said that, as far as Childrens DVDs go, Alice in Wonderland 2010 is obviously one to watch and we think of it to be one of the better Tim Burton films available.
A word of warning though; this movie is a lot darker than others that you might have experienced - including the Walt Disney version. It's most likely not a great movie for youngsters. A few of the fight scenes are possibly not suitable for all ages - but the PG certificate suggests this.
Kids over the age of 7 or 8 should have no difficulties watching this motion picture with their moms and dads though. It is not scary - it is just a bit on the dark side. Mr Johnny Depp is fantastic with this role and we have to admit, we did think (on first impressions) he could be playing exactly the same character as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but in fact he plays a much deeper character who occasionally is very humorous. As adults, we did have a good laugh out loud many times during the movie which is unusual for Childrens DVDs nowadays.
Mia Wasikowska, who plays Alice, is a fantastic little actress and plays the role exceptionally well. Helena Bonham Carter is cast as the wicked Queen of Hearts from the first Alice in Wonderland tale. But, we felt her overall performance was more like Queenie from Blackadder. For those of you who don't know this character, you might find the pitch of her voice and gestures a little bothersome but for us it was quite entertaining - although to tell the truth, a blatant rip-off.
The CGI figures are wonderful, specially the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) and Absalom (Alan Rickman). Yet, with regards to elegance, the scenery in which Alice gets to spend lots of her time, is not competitive with, say, from the Walt Disney movie. The Jabberwocky is a fantastic evil dragon-like beast who finally shows up at the end of the film and with regards to special effects, it's good - not outstanding.
We felt much of the tension and story was greatly akin to a Harry Potter motion picture as opposed to the traditional tale of Alice in Wonderland the Walt Disney edition. Nevertheless, like the majority of things, Childrens DVDs are transforming so we predicted a change from the original, much loved, Alice in Wonderland Disney motion picture.
Overall, we would recommend this for kids older than about seven and we'd recommend the PG certification is abided by. It's an excellent dvd but if you've seen the original Walt Disney film, or read the Lewis Carroll books, then don't get your hopes up! Childrens DVDs are transforming and we feel that this is an excellent expression of what kids expect from a dvd these days.
