A review of the Movie The Adjustment Bureau
The setting of this movie is contemporary New York and included in the cameos is Mayor Bloomberg himself.
Despite the today setting, the movie has a throwback feel in terms of the some of the style to the days where men wore hats and stopped or at least slowed down the pace a bit for some pondering and some thought.
What particularly works well in this movie is the pacing, which at times slows and stills to where you can focus more on the plot and the possible meanings and interpretations of the scenes.
The movie stars Matt Damon as David Norris, a pre ordained political star who makes it too Congress at age 24 and has an initial foiled Senate bid in the State of New York.
However we learn he is slated for a vast political future that if it is to be, will include a rather meteoric rise and at least that is the plan for now.
He meets a mysterious woman named Elise on the evening of his foiled Senate bid and he is instantly mesmerized by the sudden appearance of this stranger who disappears as suddenly as she appeared.
And thus evolves into the mystery of the movie and who this woman might be for him.
In the meantime, he learns that is is being followed by Adjusters, angel like men who seem like secret agents, who may or may not intervene in the affairs of men depending on the plan.
The plan for them is that Mr. Norris will achieve the to utmost political milestones and romance must be cast aside if this it too be and his plans along those lines are oppossing bigger wishes even though he is not quite sure why and how this is the case..
Thus the conflict evolves.
Norris does not take kindly to this interference and has a good degree of pluck in fighting back, but the sense is that he may be in a losing battle as far as he own personal wishes. Even with this he remains obstinate.
The science fiction aspects occurring in the latter portion of this movie reminds you of the film Jumper but with a New York setting and twists.
The movie offers excellent acting throughout and an open ended interpretation as to who these heavenly beings are and how much sway do that actually have and indeed are their motives and means a mixed bag both in this story and on a mass scale for humanity as a whole?
One of the larger views of this film that really comes through is the fragile state of affairs in just about everything. Norris can rally a lot of aplomb in defending himself and his hoped for personal paths, but ultimately it depends on the winds of fate, and also perhaps the moves on the checkerboard of these mysterious men, and the uncertainty as to whether he will find and experience some mercy upon his own state of affairs and whether his own personal freedom can become operative and find fruition in reality.
Overall the movie is raising more questions that it answers, but it has a deft touch in raising some timely and interesting issues as to what might be the true agency of all concerned.
