1965 in Women's Tennis
The scene for women's tennis has become popular in a very different way than it was in the days of tennis legends such as Billy Jean King and Margaret Court. Today it seems that many of the stars of women's tennis are just as famous for their good looks and modeling as they are for their athletic prowess. While the level of competition is as high as ever today, there was a certain spirit in the sport in the year 1965 that may not be here today.
Women's tennis is much the same as men's tennis in that they both play a year that has tons of different tournaments throughout the year. While they all play a load of tournaments, there are four tournaments throughout the year that really stand out from the other tournaments that are played throughout the year. These tournaments are the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open.
The year previous to 1965 these Grand Slam tournaments were dominated by the likes of two players: Margaret Court and Maria Bueno. Court had managed to pull out victories in the Australian Open and the French Open. Meanwhile, Bueno was the champion of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
With this sort of success from these players in the previous year, most people expected to see both of these ladies as champions yet again in 1965.
The Australian Open seemed to be a tournament that Court would be destined to win. Coming into the year Court had managed to win the Australian Open 5 consecutive times. It just seemed that when that tournament came around she was always there playing at the highest level possible. The 1965 tournament brought out the best in Margaret Court once again. She plowed through her opponents round by round en route to winning her 6th consecutive Australian Open.
The French Open had been won by Court the year before as well and many expected her to carry on with the same dominance that she did in the Australian Open. However, she did not have nearly the same historic success in that Grand Slam tournament as she did in Australia. She had won the tournament just twice before, with a variety women winning in previous years.
Among the names of women that had won the tournament in previous years was Lesley Turner. Turner won the tournament just 2 years previous to 1965 and still had confidence that she could get it done on the clay surface. It turned out that she had what was necessary to beat Court and won the Grand Slam.
Court seemed to be on a mission for the rest of the year. It was clear that she would not let anything stand in her way in her quest towards Grand Slams. She would not let Maria Bueno or anyone else ruin her plans as she went on to take the Grand Slam at Wimbledon.
She was still not done there as she was ready to make a run at the U.S. Open. She managed to pull out her 3rd major of the year at the U.S. Open.
