Pet Insurance for the Collie

The Collie is a dog breed that has a longhistory, from being recognized in the 1800s to becoming a great family dog today.

The Collie originated in Scotland and was originally used as a sheep herder. While you can still find them herding animals today, they also are family pets who use their herding skills to keep other pets and children in order.

This dog breed has a royal following, since Queen Victoria became a fan in the late 1800s and stayed a fan for several decades after that.In 1878 she entered two Collies in the Westminster Dog Show, which gave the breed even more exposure and increased their popularity with people all over the world. More recently, the show Lassie promoted the breed in the United States and beyond, showing them as smart family dogs.

Collies are sensitive, devoted and gentle. They are eager to please and can be trained easily. However, they are prone to several pet health conditions, including Collie eye anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy, gastric torsion, and dermatomyositis.

Collie eye anomaly is an eye condition that is characterized by abnormalities in the posterior part of the eye. The condition can range from mild to severe blindness. Progressive retinal atrophy is a group of hereditary diseases described by the gradual deterioration of the retina. It usually begins as night blindness and progresses to total blindness. Gastric torsion is a life-threatening condition where the stomach twists over itself, causing extreme pain for the dog. If not treated right away, the dog will die.And dermatomyositis is an inherited connective-tissue disease that causes inflamed skin, blood vessels, and muscles.

Pet insurance can help offset the costs associated with these conditions. Remember to compare pet insurance companies before making your final decision.

Collies need a good walk or jog daily to get enough exercise to stay content. If jogging is not an option, even a good play session can help get the energy out. Dog playdates and doggie daycare can give dogs the stimulation they need without taking up too much of the dog owners time.

The breed stands between 22" and 26" and weighs between 50 pounds and 75 pounds. They have long straight hair that can be sable and white, tricolor, blue merle, or white. This hair needs brushing every other day to prevent mats. They live to be 8 to 12 years old.
