, or if you know of a dear friend in this situation, you may be glad to know that massage therapy has been found to be beneficial for their care. This includes the various massage therapy modalities offered by professional massage spas that give reflexology massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy. People in Bucks County, Doylestown, Warminster, Horsham, Willow Grove, Abbington, Ambler, Chalfont, New Hope, Newtown, Richboro, South Hampton and Lansdale can find a reputable therapeutic massage spa in Warrington PA.

Cancer is a serious illness and when the patient is in the advanced stages of cancer, there is often no hope of a cure. Even worse, the patient with advanced cancer is often in deep pain. The pain and the hopelessness result in anxiety and deep depression. Family members and concerned friends are always looking for ways to alleviate the discomforts and elevate the mood of such patients with advanced cancer. A study has proven that massage therapy can indeed lessen the pain experienced by advanced cancer patients and improve their mood. These effects are, however, only temporary. No matter how short these periods of comfort are, licensed massage therapist Tracy Walton points out that they are of immeasurable value to the patients.

The study called entitled "Massage Therapy versus Simple Touch to Improve Pain and Mood in Patients with Advanced Cancer: A Randomized Trial" was published on September 16, 2008 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Covering 380 adult patients with advanced cancer who had been suffering from moderate levels of pain or more, the study divided the participants into a massage therapy group and a simple touch group. For two weeks, the massage therapy group was offered up to six voluntary sessions of 30 minute massage therapy sessions given by trained massage therapists using unscented massage cream. In the simple touch group, the 30 minute sessions were given by untrained personnel who also used unscented massage cream but merely placed both of their hands on each of 10 specified body areas for three minutes at a time.

The patients were assessed before the two week treatment period, after the treatment period and every week afterwards for three weeks. The patients in the massage therapy group had more pain relief and better mood elevation than the patients in the simple touch group. These effects were, however, only for the short term.

According to licensed massage therapist Tracy Walton, who has had many patients in the advanced stages of cancer, even those short term benefits are already of much comfort. She says, "My clients tell me that they don't just fight cancer: they endure, yield, pray, grieve and persevere. Cancer requires people to spend time in confusion, terror, and mystery." Massage therapy affords them some respite, Walton declares. When they allow others to give them such therapeutic massage, they are able to rest and are recharged.

True, there are several therapeutic massage modalities offered in professional massage spas. These may include reflexology massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy, among others. It is best, however, if patients with advanced cancer ask for therapeutic massage given by a licensed massage therapist who has undergone specific oncology massage therapy training. Such a therapist will know how to properly care for cancer patients. Residents of Bucks County, Doylestown, Warminster, Horsham, Willow Grove, Abbington, Ambler, Chalfont, New Hope, Newtown, Richboro, South Hampton and Lansdale should ask for this from their trusted therapeutic massage spa in Warrington PA.
