Brandi Carlile's third album, Give Up the Ghost
, may have just surfaced in October, but Paste Magazine reveals that the singer-songwriter will be among the artists featured on the latest project by New Orleans' Preservation Jazz Hall Band, PRESERVATION. The Sony RED distributed release will arrive on Feb. 16, 2010 and will see Carlile putting her unique imprint on the gospel staple "Old Rugged Cross." The album will also feature Big Easy native Louis Armstrong giving his own "Rockin' Chair" a makeover while Tom Waits tries his hand at "Tootie Ma is a Big Fine Thing," the earliest-known recorded Mardi Gras song. Merle Haggard, Ani DiFranco, Jim James, Cory Chisel, Pete Seeger, Andrew Bird and the Blind Boys of Alabama are also featured on PRESERVATION.Instead of Carlile making a guest appearance, it was Elton John who made a cameo in Carlile's Give up the Ghost, which arrived on Oct.6. The Rocket Man joined Brandi on the song "Caroline" off Give up the Ghost, which features string arrangements by Paul Buckmaster, an associate of Elton John. Carlile previously told Billboard.com that John is "my greatest influence since I was really young, about 11 years old," but she also managed to snag Indigo Girls' Amy Ray (for "Looking Out"). Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Benmont Tench from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers also both appear on "...Ghost."
A native of a tiny town just 50 miles away from Seattle, Wash. called Ravensdale, Brandy Carlile was raised listening to country music and made her stage debut when she was just eight years old. By the time she entered her teens and started playing guitar, Carlile's tastes had expanded to include rock 'n' roll artists like Elton John (Tumbleweed Connection is one of her favorite albums of all time). She eventually became a regular on the Seattle bar scene, even singing backup for an Elvis tribute act at one point, thereafter forming a group with twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth, formerly of the Fighting Machinists.
After opening for India.Arie, Shawn Colvin, Dave Matthews and others, Brandy Carlile self-released the first of what would become a series of self-released recordings, and Columbia Records came calling in 2005. An eponymous album followed later that year and Rolling Stone hailed her of 2005's "Artists to Watch." Not bad for her first major-label release! Produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring her same band, The Story arrived in 2007 and the 10-track Give Up the Ghost is its follow-up.
Brandy Carlile's Give Up the Ghost Traveling Show may have wrapped up on Oct. 24, but after a few scattered dates in December, she will embark on a new string of dates in the New Year. Carlile will kick off her 2010 road trip with a Jan. 12 date in Spokane, Wash. and will weave her way throughout the U.S., making stops in cities including Denver, Colo.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Des Moines, IA; Albany, N.Y.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Teton Village, Wyo.; Keene, N.H.; Montclair, N.J.; Dallas; TX; Tallahassee, Fla.; San Diego, Calif.; Anaheim, Calif.; Reno, Nev. and more before finishing things up in Bellingham, Wash. on March 19.
