You Just Found Out Your Pet Has A Terminal Illness, What Do You Do?

You Just Found Out Your Pet Has A Terminal Illness, What Do You Do?

There are few aspects to this question that need to be addressed

. One, is the health and situation your pet is in and its well being. The other is you, your family and anyone who may be affected by this news. Keep in mind, both are very important aspects to consider and both need to be tended to.

Lets start with your pet. It obviously depends on the status of your pets health and what type of terminal illness has been diagnosed. Depending on the answer to your pets health you may have to make arrangements at home for a comfortable environment. If your pet is having trouble with stairs, you may need to make it so your pet does not have to go up and down them. If they are having trouble digesting their food and accidents happen in the house, make sure you are taking the necessary precautions and giving them the best living situation. Look for signs from your pet. If they tend to stay in one area of your home make that area comfortable for them. Make food and water easily accessible. Your pet relies on you as their guardian to make the right decisions towards their surroundings. Spend time with your pet. This will not only give you a sense of comfort but your pet will also appreciate any hugs and love it receives.

Lets face it you have received extremely difficult news. When you get news like your pet has a terminal illness you tend to immediately go into a grieving process before your pet has actually passed. This is common as you are dealing with the emotions of knowing what the final outcome at some point will be. It is natural to hurt, feel sad or even depressed. Reach out to a support group, a friend who understands or look into getting a book about losing a pet. Know that you are not alone. Many people have had to go through the loss of a pet. Dont hold your emotions in, whatever you do make sure you are taking adequate steps to dealing with the loss.

If you have small children make sure you see that their emotional needs are being tended to as well. Small children dont always understand the whole event but be careful not to exclude them from participating in the grieving process as it is a loss for them too. Depending on the age of the child, talk to them about the pets condition but dont be overly graphic with details either, use good judgment. Talk about good memories and allow them to share in the loss. You Just Found Out Your Pet Has A Terminal Illness, What Do You Do?

It is one of the most difficult times in your life, when losing a friend, companion and family member. Dont expect everyone to understand. Some people who do not have the same bond with pets most likely will not understand what you are going through. The bond you have with your pet is special, unique and it is between you and that pet. Not everyone is as lucky to be able to experience that relationship between a human and a pet.

Finally, although the news is detrimental to you and your family it is a good time to discuss or make a decision on what you will do once the time arrives and your pet has passed away. Talk to your veterinarian about what your options are, home burial or cremation are the most common. When the time comes and your pet does pass you can focus on your emotions and feelings and you wont have to make such a difficult decision. You will have enough to deal with when that time comes.
