Bayazid Bastami Tomb is located in Bastam which is in Semnan province of Iran. It is, in fact, a complex which has many other well-known burial structures. The tomb can be seen to the north of the mausoleum of Imamzadeh Mohammad in Bastam. The architectural style is very simple with a marble slab on the grave inscribed with sayings by Hazrat Ali.

This resting place is dedicated to Hazrat Bayazid. His grandfather was a Zoroastrian who became a Muslim. He had three sons and Bayazid was born to Tayfur. Bayazid spent his childhood confined to his house and the mosque, but greatly admired the Sufi concept.

Intoxicated Sufi

He became an ascetic and spent the rest of his life in discussing Sufism with others. He gave up all materialistic pleasures and devoted himself to the service of God. With time, this process led to self annihilation which is how Sufism describes you can merge with the divine.

He was known as an intoxicated Sufi because of his expression of love for God. Many people became his followers and still revere him as Bayazid Bastami. You are highly recommended to visit his tomb when you travel to Iran.

Self Annihilation

Bayazid greatly revered Dhu'l-Nun al Misri who had made the doctrine of ma'rifa (gnosis). This laid down how the shaykh (guide) and murid (initiate) could communicate with each other. Bayazid promoted this doctrine and integrated it with the concept of ecstasy which leads to self annihilation in front of divinity.

Sufism, which was earlier based on obedience and piety, now had divine love integrated into it. He asked everyone who believed him, to forsake everything for the love of God. His words had a profound effect on the students who spent their time in understanding the concept of wahdat al-wujud (Unity of Being).

His Dreams

Bayazid died at the age of seventy and was buried in Bastam, Semnan. He lived in the period which was hundred years prior to the birth of Sheikh Abul Hassan. He claimed that he had made a journey through the seven heavens in his dreams. This can be co-related with Mi'raj of the Prophet Mohammad. The people who believe in him, remember him at the Bayazid Bastami Tomb when they travel to Iran.
