There are a lot of innovative ideas used when people are trying to raise road safety awareness. But one town in rural Australia has taken it a step further by renaming the town from Speed, to Speed kills.
The tiny town which houses only forty five people is situated in Victoria and intends to keep the new name for the whole of March before reverting back to their original name of Speed, and are urging other towns and villages to do the same. They have already identified four Speed's in the united states who they hope will do the same thing. Car accidents in Australia are at an all time high with young drivers racing round the quiet roads and a lot of illegal car racing taking place in the dark evenings.
Sheep farmer Phil Down has agreed to change his name to Phil Slow Down to make the campaign more successful, and the tiny little residence already has thirty three thousand fans on their facebook page which is no mean feat for such a small place. It comes after the death rate on rural roads in Australia rose by a quarter in 2010, giving the highest death rate ever.
The idea came from the Victoria Accident Transport Commission who approached the town and asked if they would consider changing its name if a donation was given to charity. The agreement was that the money would only be given if they raised over one thousand facebook fans.
Speaking to ABC television, Phil Slow Down said: "It's virtually on the road to somewhere else, so we've taken our quirky name and run with it to bring the attention to the campaign of trying to get people to slow down on country roads and especially through small towns."
