New Year Celebrations In Phnom Penh - Celebrate The New Year The Khmer Way!

The capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh is also the countrys largest city and its political

, industrial, cultural, economic and tourist centre. The city still features plenty of historical buildings and monuments from the countrys French colonial times. For the tourist, Phnom Penh offers a veritable feast of hitherto unspoilt attractions that are yet to be made famous worldwide. Some of the more popular attractions in Phnom Penh include the Royal Palace, The National Museum, The Silver Pagoda, Wat Phnom, Wat Ounalom, Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek, Koh Dach and Mekong Island.

Like in most other Asian countries, most events and festivals in Cambodia are commemorated with much fervor and enthusiasm with traditions and rituals taking centre stage. Commemorated in mid April, the Cambodian New Year or the Chaul Chnam Thmey" is held over three days and is also called the The Three Days of The New Year - Moha Songkran, Wanabat and Tanai Lieang Saka.

On the first day of the New Year or Moha Songkran, the people in Phnom Penh and Cambodia in general will assemble in temples and shrines to worship the Lord Buddha by chanting, lighting candles and burning incense sticks. Most locals also wash themselves with holy water to bring good luck. During the second day of the New Year or Wanabat, Cambodians are supposed to do good deeds and commemorate their ancestors. On the third day of the New Year or Tanai Lieang Saka, Buddhists bathe Buddha statues and images of elders using perfumed water to bring about good luck and long life. Houses in Phnom Penh as well as its streets are usually decorated with bright lights, flowers and lanterns throughout the New Year.
