Tongli Living A Life On The Water
Tongli has been dubbed the Little Venice of China due to its similarities to the water town in Italy.
With its networks of waterways that can be traversed by boats this charming area of Suzhou undeniably lives up to its nickname.
Tongli is made up of seven islands that are separated by a total of 15 different rivers which creates an interesting network. Walking between the islands is also possible through the use of the 49 stone bridges. Some roads can be found in Tongli, but the majority of transport is through the canals. The shape of the entire town is circular with an outer layer and an inner layer.
Each of the bridges has a unique name capturing a spiritual aspect including names like Peace and Tranquillity Bridge, Lasting Celebration Bridge and Luck Bridge. However the town is not just about the water and the bridges.

On either side of the canal, buildings reflect carved windows, flying eaves, porcelain furniture, dapper gardens, and stairs that lead in to the water. The reason for this artistic brilliance is due to the fact that the Tongli has always been an important cultural centre being the home of many painters, poets and renowned scholars. A significant amount of their works can be found in the town.
