Merit Gold - History of the American Silver Eagle Coin

The official silver coin of the United States of America, the American Silver Eagle was first minted in the year 1986, after the Liberty Coin Act of 1985 ratified its minting. Did you know that the minting orders were given basically to utilize all the silver that was there with the Defense National Stockpile, in a way that would not lead to unnecessary increase in the price of silver or the silver's future trading. The coins were put into circulation in September 1986.

The American Silver Eagle is the purest silver coin in circulation in the country, with its silver content being 99.999 percent. Copper makes up the remaining 0.001 percent. The coin has one troy ounce or 1 oz. of silver metal in it and has a denomination or face value of $1. The US Mint certifies its authenticity, granting it the status of a legal tender. Your Financial portfolio manager will tell you that the coin can be used at its face value, that is at $1 value to settle debts. Though nobody would do that when it is apparent that the market value of the coin is higher due to the intrinsic silver content, it is necessary for you to know that even if you attempt to settle your $1 debt through it, the creditor cannot refuse to accept it.

The American Silver Eagle is considered as one of the most beautiful bullion coins minted in the country, after the Saint Gauden Double Eagle Gold Coin. The figure of Walking Liberty has been adapted from Half Eagle. It was originally designed by Adolph A. Weinman and had become very popular. The Walking Liberty, holding an olive branch in her hand is pointing towards progress with the other. The sun's rays are depicted in the background and the word Liberty is sculpted on the top. On the left, words "In God We Believe" are printed.Merit Gold - History of the American Silver Eagle Coin

The reverse side is designed by John Mercanti and features the traditional Heraldic Eagle with an olive branch in its right talon and clasping a bunch of arrows in its left talon. The front shield has a banner that proclaims the words "E Pluribus Unum" and on the top is the inverted pyramid formed by the 13 star arrangement, significant of the 13 original colonies of the US. The denomination and the year are also printed on the reverse side.

The US Mint has authorized various brokerage houses, banks, financial institutions and dealers to buy and sell the American Eagle Silver. The dimensions of the coin are 40.6 mm (diameter) and 2.98 mm (thickness).
