Explore The World Of Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter is renown for her delightful collection of childrens books

, the most famous of which, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, is still delighting children today. The World of Beatrix Potter is the only Beatrix Potter themed attraction in Europe and celebrates Potters memorable cast of characters, including the iconic Peter Rabbit, as well as her love and respect of the natural world.

Born in 1866 in South Kensington, Beatrix Potter took numerous vacations with her family to Scotland and the Lake District of England, where she gained an appreciation of the natural world.

Potters keen interest in the creatures of the land inspired her series of childrens books. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published in 1902, and its resulting success led to the patent and production of a soft toy, making Peter Rabbit the oldest licensed character.

With Potters success in writing and illustrating childrens books came financial independence, allowing her to buy Hill Top Farm in the Lake District. She would later buy various properties in the area. In 1913 she married William Heelis and turned to farming Herdwick Sheep, becoming the first woman president-designate of the Herdwick Sheepbreeders Association.

Upon her death, Potter left nearly all her land, including 4,000 acres and various farms and cottages in the Lake District, to the Natural Trust. Hill Top Farm is now open to visitors as well.

The World of Beatrix Potter is a popular family attraction in the Lake District, introducing children to the beloved characters in Potters books, including Jemima Puddle-duck, Mrs Tiggy-winkle, and, of course, Peter Rabbit. The attraction also includes a new Peter Rabbit Garden and a Cumbria for Excellence Local Food and Drink Award-winning Tea Room.
