Diet And Autism

Diet And Autism

Autism and Yeast.

Is there a proven link between diet and autism? The short answer is no, but that's a long way from the whole story. There are many reports of significant changes in behaviour traditionally associated with autism that have occurred after specific changes in diet. Gluten free and casein free diets have been found to be beneficial for some autism sufferers.

So what might the link be? Some research has discovered that many autism sufferers have different "gut flora" from the average population. Gut flora refers to the quantity and types of bacteria living in the digestive system. When the normal healthy balance in the system is disturbed, harmful bacteria, particularly Candida Albicans yeast, can spread unchecked with serious consequences. As the yeast fungus speads and invades the body, toxins are released which are known to have a significant detrimental effect on how you feel and think.

Common causes of yeast overgrowth are as a result of exposure to antibiotics and prolonged illnesses. Anti biotics are designed to kill harmful bacteria, but in essence they kill bacteria indiscriminately, often leaving your digestive system with very low levels of the "good" bacteria essential for good digestion and general health and vitality. This allows vigorous bacteria such as Candida Albicans to explode in growth, fed by diets too rich in sugars and yeast. Without the right diet to halt the growth and re-balance the system, a wide range of symptoms and conditions can develop.

There are, however, a growing number of reports of autism spectrum children exhibiting improved social skills, such as eye contact, after a yeast free diet has been introduced. While the conventional science is still testing this connection, adopting a yeast control diet is really a "no risk" choice. The least that wil happen is that the immune system will be boosted, and if a yeast overgrowth was present in the system, symptoms of dietary disorders will be diminished or eliminated, harmful toxins will be eliminated, and general energy and vitality will increase. Since the brain works best when good nutrition is absorbed efficiently by a healthy digestive system, it stands to reason that mental functioning will also be enhanced.

If you are aware of prolonged or intensive application of antibiotics, or long illnesses that would have weakened the immune system, then assisting and nourishing the body to regain its normal healthy functioning through dietary changes is an important investment in a healthy future.
