Whilst the whole process of moving to Australia is actually quite straightforward
as far as visa applications and long distance moves go, there are 4 key points that you should always keep in mind if you are planning a move Down Under.1. Get a job - although there are various visas available to allow you to move to Australia without already having a job in place before you move, if you can arrange some type of employment before you go, your application will be looked upon more favourably, generally irrelevant of the type of visa that you're applying for.
Whilst some of the visas that come under the work category require for the applicant to have employment lined up in country, even if you move to Australia on a visa that doesn't require it, it is generally considered that your application will be given an extra amount of precedence over others. This is because you are showing that not only have you got the initiative and the skills to gain employment, but you are also reducing the likelihood of being a burden on the Australia economy.
2. Move to live with family - if you are struggling to find employment in Australia, but want to move to the country and already have family residing there, your best bet is to apply for a Family visa.
The reason behind this is that the applicant doesn't have to prove that they have employment lined up for them to enter once they are living in Australia. Instead, the relatives who they are moving to live with have to show that they can support the person in everyway for the first 2 years of their residence, something which most would be more than happy to do.
3. Have extra funds - regardless of the type of visa that you are applying for, it's likely that you will have already started putting money away in anticipation of your move to Australia.
Although it's also likely that you've sat down and worked out how money you will need to get yourself setup in the country, it is always strongly recommended that you save between an extra 10 and 20%.
You may believe that you have covered every base and can't think of anything else that might cost you money, but how many times have you thought 'Oh, x pounds would be really useful right now', whilst living in the UK?
Whether it's for meals out or emergency house repairs, always overestimate how much money you need - you'll be pleased you did once you've moved.
4. Plan, prepare, prosper - Benjamin Franklin, one of the United States of America's Founding Fathers, said that "by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail" and prior to any move to Australia, it is highly recommended that you research, plan and prepare yourself as much as you possibly can.
Taking several holidays is a must and should be the most basic researching and planning that you do before your move. However, you should also spend hours upon hours looking at information resources, governmental advice and taking advice and information from people who have made the move to Australia already.
This doesn't mean that you should know every piece of information about the kangaroo of Australian Rules football, but instead it means that you should have a fantastic knowledge of Australia and its rules and regulations before you even step foot on its soil as a long term resident.
It might not seem important before your move, but by being as informed as you possibly can, you'll be a lot more comfortable and confident once you have moved.
