Youth soccer training is an amazing aerobic workout burning up to 1500 calories for a 2-hour practice. Year after year child obesity continues to be a problem among youth in America. In the 1990's child obesity problems were primarily among older children between the ages of 8-13. Yet, because children are smarter and are exposed to more at a younger age, they are now demanding more, and parents provide it, because they want their children to be happy.

In addition to toys and activities one of the things that children are demanding more of these days is food. In the Washington, DC metropolitan area you can not drive at least 2 miles on a main road without seeing a McDonald's, Burger King, or KFC. For the fast food industry this is a good thing because that means that they are expanding and making money. However for children with little to no activity this is not a good thing.

With the fast food restaurant's trans fat, saturated fat, and salt infested products, children are becoming overweight at a rapid pace. Statistics show that 10% of children between the ages 2-5 are overweight. According to Head Trainer Justin Reid, "The reason why child obesity has become such an issue is because kids are overeating, and they engage in little activity on a daily basis. The only time that children engage in physical activities consistently are during recess. Yet, the thing about recess is that there is no structure and kids are free to do whatever they want. So if a kid wants to socialize with friends or walk around then they are free to do so."

Children who are obese and engage in recess activities often times have a very difficult time keeping up with children their age. "Kids like to run after each other and play tag. Others like to jump rope, play soccer, football, or basketball during recess. All of these activities require good physical fitness in order to keep up, however, if a child is unable to do so, then they often times become upset, they no longer want to play the game, and they feel as though everyone around them is too fast, strong, or better than them." Mentally, to be an overweight child can also cause problems for the child's confidence. A lack of belief in oneself can lead to failures in the classroom, socially, and in athletics. It can also lead to anger and depression and for one to be made fun of from their classmates.

Overeating can also cause many health problems to a child's body as he or she moves into the stages of adolescence. Heart attacks, diabetes, and high cholesterol are all effects that can dictate a child's life if the parent does not choose to provide a healthy environment. Having an obese child can also affect other siblings. Siblings may often time feel left out and unimportant, and later in life, may show resentment towards one another.

Steps to controlling child obesity

Have children engage in team sports at a young age.

Change your (parent) eating habits and set a good example for your child.

Do not bring products into the home that are high in saturated fat. (Cut out the junk food). Force your child to eat fruits and vegetables.

Do not pack unhealthy food in your child's lunchbox.

If necessary, put childproof locks on the refrigerator and cabinets.

Take your child out on a walk, let them explore all that your area has to offer. (Take them to museums, theme parks, local parks, the gym, and a friend's house)

Prevent them from watching too much television. Do not put a television in their room. If they want to watch television let them walk to the living room, kitchen, or the parents' room.

As you can see the list goes on and on. However, the most important thing is for them to be around friends and family to remain active all of the time. It is always good if they have positive role models that they can look up to, and most importantly, it is always good if parents lead by example.
