Your Day Planner Will Keep You Out Of "time Debt."

People often get into financial difficulty by buying on credit

, thinking they will have enough money in the future to pay off their debts. Unfortunately it seldom works out the way they planned. They find themselves in debt because they failed to budget their money.

Similarly, people take on needless tasks, say "yes" too often, and over-commit themselves because they fail to budget their time. They think that they will have more time in the future than they have now, and they keep adding additional tasks to their "To Do" lists.

A "To Do" list is like a credit card; it can accommodate an almost endless list of items with no consideration for the fact that you are committing future resources that simply won't materialize.

A "To Do" list is one-dimensional. It tells you all the things that you have decided to do; but it fails to tell you how long those things will take or when you will be able to do them.

A day planner, on the other hand, is a time budget, which displays the amount of time you have at your disposal. It prevents you from committing time that has already been allocated to other tasks or activities.

To use your day planner as a budget, enter all your priority tasks and activities directly into its pages, blocking off adequate time for each. You will find that time is limited, and that many of the tasks will have to be scheduled in future weeks in order to get them done.

Just as you should keep some money in reserve for contingencies, you should leave free space in your day planner to accommodate any important but urgent tasks or crises that invariably occur.

A "To Do" list has a useful purpose. It allows you to write down all the things you would like to do so you won't forget them. But you should never use it as a time management tool. Those who do are usually more concerned with crossing off as many items as possible with little thought to their importance. The items that get copied over are frequently the more important goal-related activities. And things that get delayed are frequently abandoned

Instead, budget your time using your day planner. Schedule appointments with yourself to work on those important items that will have the greatest impact on your success

Working from a day planner as opposed to a "To Do" list is both realistic and effective. It is realistic since you cannot block off more time than appears in your planner. And it is effective because it encourages you to use your available time on the most important things. You will soon realize that you can't do everything but .you can anything;

To use a day planner as a time budget, you must select one that displays all seven days of the week from early morning until late evening, with each day broken into 15-minute or half-hour segments. Then schedule your priorities a week or two in advance - before your planner is filled with other people's priorities.

If you mismanage your money, you might be able to earn more; but if you mismanage your time, you can never recover what you have lost. Budget wisely.
