Woodson Wins Nfl Defensive Player Of The Year Award
The Green Bay Packers star defensive back Charles Woodson has done something that
no one has done in the NFL since the great Deon Prime Time Sanders did in 1994. Woodson just became the first defensive back to win the Defensive player of the year award after a stellar season that ended with packers losing to the Arizona Cardinals in overtime on Sunday.
This year was suppose to be a rebuilding year for the Packers defense who came into the year worrying about how well their defense would be able to play any given Sunday. Thanks to Woodson leadership and playmaking skills the Packers have worked their way into being the 2nd best defensive unit in the NFL this year.
For Woodson he put together arguably his best NFL season in his 12-year career this year, which led to him being selected for the award. For years even though Woodson has always been a great player coming out of the University of Michigan a National Champion and Heisman award winner many people expected him to win the defensive player of the year award a lot earlier in his career. But lets face it he was stuck on the Oakland Raiders for a while, one of the worst teams in the league the last 12 years.
Woodson finished this season with 70 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, and 9 interceptions three of which he returned for a touchdown. Out of 50 votes, Woodson received 28 first place votes twice as much as the second place runner up Darelle Revis who finished with 14. Many expected the voting to be a lot closer this year after Revis also had an outstanding season making himself a household name. Under new NY Jets head coach Rex Ryan, Revis established himself as one of the top shut down corners in the NFL.
But all around Woodson had the better year, he not only played well in pass coverage, he helped his team win. Woodson was able to come up with big plays when his team needed him the most He played against other teams top receivers, and also was used as a blitzing corner to create turnovers, which suited him well.
Even though Woodson finished the season with one of his best years, the first round loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the playoffs still has him dreaming of a better season again next year and the ultimate goal to become a Super Bowl Champion.
