With Japanese Knotweed Youll Never Get Loan-ly

Unlikely as it sounds, weeds do not just have an affect on your garden image or quality

of your garden wall or floor tiles; believe it or not an article from the Metro last month proved that they can also stop you getting a mortgage.

Dave Williams from Cornwall attempted to borrow money from his Santander branch but was turned down the request of 83,000 due to the very tiny amount of Japanese knotweed on a land that he has recently purchased to extend his garden. Mr Williams claimed that if the weather had been winter the surveyor would not have noticed the plant and he would have been granted his wish, however irritatingly knotweed stays around as dead canes throughout the winter months and are not hard to spot.

Although it may seem to some that this is a ridiculous situation to be in with a simple garden weed, you will also be surprised at the damage this deadly plant could potentially do to affect your home. This is due to the plant being tolerant of soil acidity, heavy metal contamination and air pollution, and therefore it becomes rapidly invasive and causes more problems if not dealt with quickly. Furthermore the council will not be able to help you as unfortunately it is your duty to eradicate it.

Mr Williams could treat the knotweed with a suitable weed killer and eventually it will die with perseverance, however with this method comes a great need for patience also. Cutting the plant back or attempting to dig it up will only encourage further growth as the roots will spread without any leaves intact. Japanese knotweed can grow through concrete and tarmac also so covering your problem will not do you any favours in terms of selling your home or applying for a loan.

Currently, throughout the British Isles, Japanese knotweed is causing the construction industry substantial financial concerns running into millions of pounds in costs to eradicate the dreaded weed. The Metro also states that Santander is not the only company and is among a string of lenders who are now refusing mortgages if knotweed is deemed to threaten a property, even if it is growing next door. A spokesman said: If the weed threatens the structure of a building then a mortgage application would be refused.

There are environmental friendly procedures as alternatives to chemical treatments. such soil steaming and ensuring that the stem is either destroyed, burnt or dried out before disposing of to avoid further contamination. However, the solutions to Japanese knotweed removal should only be put into place by experienced professionals with a tailored method for this invasive weed.
