Why The Type Of Light Bulb Cap Is Important To Know When Buying Light Bulbs

The caps that sit on the base of a light bulb are just as important as the bulb themselves

. True, those little metal fixtures may seem rather insignificant given their size but their importance is such that they dictate which bulbs can be fitted to which light fixtures. Without the right cap, the room, alleyway, stairwell or back yard will remain in the dark. With the range of lights available on the market today, there are very definite specifications to ensure that the right bulb is fitted. For example, the two pin, or bi pin, cap on some lights can only be placed in bi pin light sockets, so gu10 LED bulbs cannot be placed in a light socket that is not designed for the gu10 cap. However, there is more than one type of bi pin cap, with the cap on g9 halogen bulbs significantly different in design and appearance, and used exclusively with certain types of halogen bulbs. The reason for a cap is to allow electrical contact between the electrical supply and the light itself, without leaving wiring and electronic aspects exposed. The metal pins make direct contact with the electricity supply, allowing the electricity to flow through the filament, creating the necessary energy to cause the light to glow and provide the required illumination. The full range of caps is extensive, but they can be broken down into three principal types, namely the bayonet, the Edison screw and the bi pin. Bayonet Cap This is arguably the most recognisable cap, and is more often than not found on the ordinary incandescent bulb selection for domestic lights, though energy saving lights also feature this cap to allow easy switch over to greener home lighting. The design is a simple metallic cap at the base of the bulb with two ears, or small pins, protruding from the side. These two pins lock into slots at the side of the socket, to hold the bulb in place. The name bayonet is derived from the thrust and twist action that is needed to fit them. Screw Cap The screw cap is also very common, with both incandescent and energy saving versions found with them. This kind of cap is simply a screw that is twisted into the socket, and is known more precisely as the Edison screw cap after its inventor, Thomas Edison. They come in a variety of different diameters, from a small srew cap to a giant screw, a factor that ensures only the right bulb can ever be fitted. This style is not exclusive to any particular appliance, though recessed downlights all make good use of it. Halogen and CFL lights are all widely available with screw caps, making it easy for home owners to switch from the incandescent to the greener option. Bi Pin Cap The bi pin cap has a number of different designs, but in essence provides a method by which the bulb is pushed into the socket and held tightly there. The pins themselves can be different in appearance. For example, the miniature halogen clear capsule has a g9 bi pin cap, which has pins that appear more like hooped wires. The gu10 bi pin, meanwhile, has pins that seem more like short metal stumps through the base of the cap. The range of bi pin caps is surprisingly wide, but not only because of the style of the pins. Generally the model number is an indication of the measurement between the pins, with g9 halogen bulbs boasting a space of 9mm between the two pins. This type of bulb is used for small decorative light fittings around the home. Spotlights and recessed lights, however, most often use gu10 LED bulbs, which have pins spaced 10mm apart that work on a twist and lock basis. One of the advantages of this model is that it is widely recognised as one of the safest types of mains voltage caps since the live parts are concealed in the socket. When it comes to fluorescent tubes, the pins are different in structure again, simply protruding from both ends. However, CFL bulbs can increase to 4 pins, depending on the particular bulb design.
