Why Staying In A Holiday Cottage In Devon Is The Perfect Choice For All The Family
As far as my children are concerned, Devon is the best place in the world! We've
just come back from a wonderful week staying in a holiday cottage in Devon, where we stayed in a fantastic little place just outside of Dartmouth. With a 7 and 5 year old, it's always with slight trepidation that I book a holiday as there are so many potential pitfalls that can make a relaxing break an unattainable goal. Whilst, 'winging it' and making plans as I went along was my idea of heaven during child-free days; with two appendages now in tow, a fixed base, room to run around and a list of child-friendly excursions now top my list of holiday needs.
With this in mind, our choice of Devon Cottages was perfect! Surrounded by the rolling countryside and complete with an open fire, I felt soothed and relaxed the whole week. Meanwhile, the children were kept occupied exploring the extensive garden, having complete freedom to run and shout. It was so much easier to know that I could prepare meals and snacks at any time, rather than having to find a restaurant with tired and hungry children in tow. It also meant the adults of the party could enjoy a quiet glass or two of wine in the evenings, without worrying about who was driving back.
We had several days out, which were far from the stressful, heated affairs of my nightmares. A trip to Paignton was probably the highlight as the children were absolutely delighted to see so many animals up close.
Catching the steam train from Kingsbridge, having caught the passenger ferry across from Dartmouth, was almost too much excitement for my little boy. It is like stepping back in time once you reached the platform and climbed aboard the train. It was great sitting back and watching the countryside pass by at a slightly slower speed than normal.
Dartmouth itself is also an ideal family location to while away a few hours. A surprise success was Newcomen's Steam Engine Museum- the children were far more enthusiastic than I could have expected to learn about the history of the steam engine. I can highly recommend the lovely cream tea served in the Royal Castle hotel.
I even managed to fit in a bit of retail therapy with a visit to Exeter.
Even this was made bearable for the kids with the promise of a trip to the cinema and a game of hide and seek in the Cathedral Green.
All in all, we had a fantastic time and Devon tops the list of cottage holiday destinations. In our family, anyway.
