Why Is Bio Banking So Expensive?

Bio banking is a major medical investigation programme

, and a registered as a charitable conviction in its own precise, with the aspire of recuperating the anticipation, diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of grave and life-threatening illnesses, as well as cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, arthritis and different types of dementia. It intends to accumulate the DNA of half a million people and follow their health and way of life for at least ten years.

The requirement for storing biological samples and specimens has increased phenomenally over the last few decades and today there are billions of samples stored worldwide. As biological samples need to be stored in a cold environment, the cost of storing these samples is quite expensive. Some types of biological samples need to be stored at -40C; some at ultra-low temperatures of -50C to -800C; while others at -1700C. Most research centres do not have facilities to store this variety of biological samples and turn to bio-banks to store them.

It is a innovative and novel idea of tracking the health records of half a million individuals, but that information is comparatively worthless unless one is competent enough to find it out in some detail through standard questionnaires, which show what they did to befall ill in the first place; but, the reliability factor is of main concern in such surveys and research method.

According to Professor Martin Jarvis of University of London College, it is been recommended that the study may cost a 1,000 pounds per partaker and that comes to almost 500 million approximately when all is said and done, and of course that kind of echelon of resource is going to eat away at the potential of other scientific studies.

Setting up a bio-bank is an extremely costly project. The maintenance and running costs of such a facility are also tremendous. That is why bio-banking costs are so exorbitant. The bio-banks require backup systems in place that can swing into action immediately, in case a fault in the regular systems is detected. Electric supply systems, cooling systems, thermostats, automatically sealing doors, IT systems, etc. all need backup systems in a bio-bank. A bio-bank just cannot afford a system breakdown.

Besides, Bio Banking is highly labour intensive as well as machine intensive. By labour and machine intensive we do not mean just the regular skilled workers; for bio banking, highly specialized doctors and researchers are needed, who have experience in this field and are willing to learn more in the medical field, which will add high training costs as well. The laboratory costs and twenty four hour climate control are other expenses that are extremely high.

In other words, bio banking is a relatively new phenomenon, which has only become possible because of technological advancement; it requires excessive funds for paying the highly specialized labour, costly equipment, training of the recruits and other associated costs. Although the western governments are supporting this program but still the budget allocation is not enough to cover the expenses.

A proper quality work and success remains in the process and day-to-day performances. They strictly manage the procedure and study the bio-specimens with clear goals. It is on the whole, an ambitious and a careful duty as it aims to operate live samples that can lead to protect the physical condition and health of other living beings.
