Why Bother With Building And Contents Insurance? - You Tell Me

Have you ever personally seen what a home looks like after it's been ravaged by fire

? Sure, you may have seen it several times on TV or in the newspapers, but unless you've actually seen it in real life it's difficult to try and imagine just how extensive the damage can be.

To make matters worse, it's not only fire damage, but instead, if the fire brigade has been called out then there's inevitably water damage as well. In fact, when a house goes up in flames it's often damaged beyond repair, meaning that a new home will need to be built.

Of course we all hope and pray that this never happens to us, but if it did and your home was raised to the ground, are you financially well off enough to be able to afford a new one. If you are, then fair enough, but most home owners aren't and this brings us to the subject of why buildings and contents insurance is something nobody should be without. Also, apart from only offering protection against disasters, this type of cover also covers you against things such as burglaries.

Many home owners who choose to go without such cover do so because they're under the impression that it costs a fortune. The truth is however, it doesn't have to, providing you take certain precautionary measures.

Buildings insurance for example provides cover for the building itself, together with garages, outbuildings, perimeter walls and all fixtures such as fitted kitchens, baths and etc. If you go ahead and have an alarm system fitted, your home will be more secure in terms of break-ins. If you have a fire alarm and smoke detectors fitted, there's less chance of your home being destroyed by a fire. These are all things which insurance companies take into consideration, so the more criteria you can meet, the lower your premiums will be.

Contents insurance is usually sold together with buildings insurance, but it can be obtained on its own. People who live in rented accommodation for example have no need for buildings insurance, but they may still want to make sure all their private belongings are covered. After all, it costs a fortune to replace household appliances such as fridges, stoves, televisions, microwave ovens, computers and etc. If someone breaks in and trashes the place, then unfortunately for the owner, it's their problem if you're only renting. Even so, you're the one who'll be left sitting in a bare home.

Fires, floods, wind damage, break-ins, theft and vandalism are just some of the reasons why buildings and contents insurance is so necessary nowadays. So many people believe they'll never be struck by a disaster, just as so many believe their homes will never get broken into, but unfortunately statistics paint a very different picture. If these things rarely happened, insurance would cost virtually nothing, or in fact, it would be non-existent.

Well, that's not the case is it? The insurance industry is booming and for good reason. After all, crime rates go up year on year in the UK and insurance companies receive more claims now than ever before. Natural disasters are also becoming increasingly frequent. Just take a look at all the nationwide flooding in recent times.

Admittedly, getting your home and your belongings insured will cost you, but providing you're able to meet certain criteria and providing you're willing to shop around, affordable buildings and contents insurance is most certainly still available in the UK.
