Which Is Better--breast Liposuction Or Breast Reduction?

For some women, paying to surgically reduce the size of one's breasts is unthinkable

. However, for women who suffer physical pain from excessively large and heavy breasts, the thought is frequently a welcome one.

Women who have excessively heavy breasts can experience a number of problems. Sometimes, they experience neck, back and shoulder pain because their breasts put so much strain on their joints and negatively affect their posture. Some women with excessively large breasts find that they actually have infections or skin disorders where their breasts come into contact each other or the underlying skin, because the skin is seldom allowed to dry properly.

Similarly, overly large breasts can interfere with physical activities such as sports or running, which makes it more difficult to get adequate exercise. From a health standpoint, some doctors consider overly large breasts to be an equally large risk in terms of cancer detection. Very large breasts are harder to get accurate mammograms of. And there are, of course, social and aesthetic reasons.

For all of these reasons and more, a number of women choose to reduce the size of their breasts through surgery. However, many have a hard time deciding between a breast reduction (also called reduction mammoplasty) and liposuction of the breast (also called lipoplasty or lipectomy).

Both procedures reduce the size of the breast. However, lipoplasty is much less invasive, and it should be chosen whenever possible.

Breast reductions are typically performed under general anesthesia, and they involve a lot of cutting. There are typically a number of large incisions made. One common way involves making one incision around the areola, one along the breast crease and one running vertically from the areola to the breast crease. The surgery removes excess skin, fat and breast tissue and repositions the nipple. It typically leaves large scars, which although they fade with time, are very visible and never completely disappear. The surgery typically takes weeks to months to recover from.

Liposuction, on the other hand, does not remove excess skin and tissue, but merely removes fat. It is performed by suctioning excess fat out through small hollow tubes called cannulas. The surgeon makes a number of small incisions, frequently smaller than 1 millimeter long, and suctions out the fat through these incisions. Depending on the composition of the breast, surgeons can sometimes remove as much as 50% of the breast tissue. Lipoplasty is typically done under local anesthesia, leaves little by way of scarring, and does not take nearly as long to recover from.
