Are Breast Implants A Mystery To You?

Are breast implants a mystery to you? If you are thinking about getting them

, here are answers to the most basic questions to help you learn more and help you decide:

1. Are there age requirements? Unless it is for reconstructive purposes, saline breast implants are approved for girls 18 and up. Silicone is approved for 22 years and up unless it is for reconstructive reasons.

The reason for the age limitations is that breasts continue to grow and develop even into their twenties and the need for increasing size may not be necessary.

2. What health conditions make them a bad idea? Cardiovascular disease, blood disorders and diabetes are all conditions that make any kind of elective surgery a bad idea. Mental instability also makes it a bad idea.

3. Are they safe? Yes, they are safe. Saline came on to the market when silicone was banned by the FDA so that further tests could be conducted. Once believed to cause autoimmune diseases and possibly cancer, silicone has since been readmitted as an approved filler for breast implants. But remember that with any type of surgery there are risks.

4. Who should not get them? Really, women 21 and under, because their bust-line is still developing. Also, women with deeper emotional issues they think will be fixed by plastic surgery and anyone who is pressured to do it for another person.

5. Is there maintenance afterwards? Once you get them, you can't just forget that they are there, especially if you have silicone. Because it is difficult to detect a rupture with silicone, you should have an MRI every couple of years to make sure all is well.

You should perform self-breast exams and see your plastic surgeon on a routine basis to make sure the tissue is healthy. Over time, it may become necessary to replace or remove them which involve additional surgeries.

6. Do they interfere with breastfeeding and mammograms? As for breastfeeding, they do not impede the process. Milk still comes in and the baby can still nurse. With mammograms, you simply have to be more careful. Tell your physician that you have breast implants. An MRI or an ultrasound may be a more effective cancer detection method.

7. What is the right size? Your body type, size and bone structure help the surgeon determine what the most natural-looking size is for you. You can also help choose the right size by testing things out at home. Use plastic bags filled with rice and add or remove volume until you are happy with how it looks.

Hopefully this will help you decide if they are right for you, but you likely have more specific questions. A board certified plastic surgeon can and should answer all of your questions during your consultation for breast implants.
