Where Are The Best Value For Money Areas To Live In Somerset?

The county of Somerset, in south west England

, includes the historic city of Wells (the second smallest city in England, thanks to its 12th century cathedral), the equally historic town of Glastonbury on the Somerset Levels, the Exmoor National Park and the seaside resort towns of Burnham-on-Sea, Minehead and Weston-Super-Mare. Somerset is a largely rural county with agriculture very much in evidence, but also has excellent leisure facilities and schools and enjoys good transport links via the M4 and M5 motorways, the national railway network and Bristol International Airport.

There is a good selection of property to be found in and around Taunton, the county town of Somerset, in the south of the county. Properties range from traditional thatched cottages to modern flats and maisonettes and terraced, semi-detached and detached houses in various sizes. The average price of property in the area is just over 200,000, but you can expect to pay 135,000 for a flat or maisonette and 300,000 for a detached house, on average.

The bustling market town of Yeovil is situated 24 miles to the southeast of Taunton and has a distinctly Victorian character, with period terraced and semi-detached houses, many of which occupy typically long plots, starting at around 120,000. The area known as "The Park", to the west of Yeovil town centre, was designated a conservation area in 2008 and offers a range of attractive late 19th century and early 20th century properties. Historical though it may be (the town is actually mentioned in the Doomsday Book), Yeovil also offers a selection of modern properties, ranging from one or two bedroom flats in new developments for around 75,000 to four or five bedroom family houses from around 250,000.

In the north of the county, which includes Portishead and Clevedon, on the outskirts of Bristol and the ever popular city of Bath, you can expect to pay in the region of 375,000 for a four bedroom house. Of course, Bath is a very popular tourist destination and Portishead and Clevedon are both mainly dormitory towns for Bristol, with expanding populations and a certain amount of light industry. However, if busy city streets are not to your liking there is any number of properties on offer in rural areas of Somerset.

If you are sufficiently well-to-do, you may like to consider one of the selection of Listed Grade I and Grade II properties available throughout the county. These typically start at around 2,500,000, however, so a more realistic aspiration may be a rural, two or three bedroom bungalow in, say, Cannington near Bridgwater or East or West Huntspill near Highbridge, with prices starting at around 130,000. Larger rural properties, such as converted barns, are available throughout the county; a three bedroom barn conversion in the small town of Radstock, just eight miles from Bath, for example, is likely to set you back somewhere between 250,000 and 300,000. Radstock is located on the Roman Fosse Way and, with its unique Victorian architecture, is likely to become a conservation area in the near future.
