When To Visit A Doctor

When To Visit A Doctor

There are some people who have their doctor's office on speed dial

, calling whenever a question arises about their own or their family's health. Other people brag about how infrequently throughout their lives they've stepped foot in any sort of medical establishment. You are probably somewhere along the spectrum between these two extremes, and you might spend some time thinking about whether a doctor's visit is really necessary in certain situations.

How do you know when it's time to schedule an appointment or just leave things to heal on their own? Your doctor in Ithaca or Oceanside is a resource even when you're healthy. Yearly physical exams provide a forum for discussion of any anomalies or concerns you may be experiencing. Even if you only see your doctor once a year, the variety of tests she can run can catch something before it turns into a serious health issue.

Depending on your age, health and medical history, and family medical history, she will be able to customize what she looks at concerning your physical body, as well as your emotional and mental state. Therefore, don't skip the yearly physical exam and other regular exams such as mammograms and colonoscopies. Otherwise, you'll need to make a decision each time you or your loved ones contract something.

For instance, during cold and flu season, you may take precautions and still end up with a troublesome cough. A little cough isn't a death sentence, of course, but if you have been coughing for over a week and are not getting better, are having trouble breathing, or are spitting up blood, it's time to make an appointment. Having the flu doesn't necessarily mean you'll need to visit the doctor, either, when you can stay home and treat it with rest and plenty of fluids, but again, if things are not resolving and you don't feel that you are getting better - or if your symptoms worsen - it's time to call.

Occasionally, you might have a feeling and sense that something simply isn't right with your body. Pains that won't go away or are unusual in their intensity and consistency; odd lumps that weren't there before; or other out-of-the-ordinary symptoms can be a good reason to get in to see your doctor. There isn't a set list of times when you need to schedule an appointment and times when you definitely don't need to worry.

Your health is unique and individual, and you'll need to make the choice based on your experiences, needs, and concerns. If you don't like visiting the doctor too often, you can certainly give yourself good odds by sticking with a healthful diet full of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, lean protein, and plenty of water. The old adage that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" has stood the test of time for centuries.
