When The Children Are Embarrassed It Is Time For A Change
Nancy was 28 years old, and she enjoyed food. Before the children were born, while she worked outside the home and was active this was not a problem.
Once she stopped working at her job and became a stay at home mom her weight tended to be higher than before, but she kept thinking she would go on a diet next week to lose the weight.
Part of the weight problem that Nancy suffered from was because she did not like to waste, so when the kids were done eating if there was food left over Nancy would eat it rather than throw it away.
Now that her children were older and at school most of the day Nancy would spent a lot of time watching TV and reading, so she was not getting the proper exercise and physical activity that was needed for weight loss either. Although she knew that she was overweight it did not seem to be that big of a problem, and she did not realize how her excess weight and obese appearance affected those that she loved.
One day Nancy was going to her daughter's school papers and came across a notice that was sent home about a school play, and Nancy was astonished to discover that her daughter had the lead part. Nothing had been said and Nancy was unaware that her daughter was even in the play.
When her daughter came home Nancy asked her about the play and whether she was in it or not, and her daughter confirmed that she was the lead actress. Nancy asked her why she did not say anything, and her daughter stated that it did not matter because she would be dropping out anyways. Nancy could tell that her daughter was upset but could not determine why, so she continued to question the girl. Finally her daughter admitted to Nancy that she did not want all of her school friends to see her mother, because she was embarrassed about Nancy's weight and because she felt her mother let herself go and stopped caring about her appearance.
Nancy was devastated, because she knew that her daughter was right in some ways. There was no medical reason for Nancy to be overweight, it just seemed to happen over the years. Nancy knew that she had to make some changes and lose weight, not only for herself but also for the sake of her children.
From that day forward Nancy took steps to lose weight and get in better physical shape. She was evaluated by her doctor to make sure that her weight loss efforts were safe, and she changed the foods that she ate as well as her level of physical activity and lifestyle. The diet that Nancy chose was one that worked well for her, and within six months she had lost almost 50 pounds because of the diet that she was following and the changes that she had made.
Her children are no longer embarrassed to be seen with her, and that is the motivation that helps Nancy keep the weight off and not slip back into her old eating habits.
