What to expect from a walking holiday

Walking holidays can mean different things to different people, whilst some people are simply looking to escape to the county and meet other walkers on short walks each day, others are looking for more challenging treks which push them to their limits. So first things first is to decide what sort of walking holiday you want.

Some walking trips will consist of a number of gentle hikes, which can be combined with other interests such as bird watching, photography etc. Such walks require little effort, but for those that fancy trekking for miles and over difficult terrain you may want to look into a trip that offers guided walks.

Walking within a group may sound restricting but this is not true. With some trips you will be free to walk within your own group with a map and basic guidelines, others will lead you back to your base.

Most companies that specialise in walking holidays will 'grade' the walks based on their difficulty. Such gradings will take into account things like the distance, terrain and whether or not there are any ascents to be made. Walks may also be graded based on the level or fitness or experience that is needed for you to finish it comfortably.

You may decide you don't want a walking holiday in this sense, there is nothing wrong with driving the country, hiring a cottage and going for walks as little or as often as you like. Trips such as these are great if you want to bring your dog along. They too can take full advantage of the great outdoors and get lots of exercise as you explore your surroundings.

If you decide to take your pet, invest in one of the dry dog bags on the market, they are ideal for towelling down your pet after a long walk, when they've managed to get wet and muddy, and will help ensure your accommodation stays clean.
