More than 200 Orange County kids and their families attended the Kids Health and Safety Fair hosted by the St. Joseph Heritage Medical Group. In preparation for the summer, the medical group hosted a day of bicycle, exercise, and skateboard fun.

"Our event focused on bike safety but promoted outdoor physical activity as well," said Margaret Macias, executive director, Center for Health Promotion at the St. Joseph Heritage Medical Group. "We distributed 115 free helmets to kids of all ages, thanks to the Orange County Health Care Agency, and had pharmacy and first aid booths to educate parents."

Bike helmets are so important that the U.S. government has created safety standards. More than 300,000 children are seen in the emergency room for bike injuries. Helmets should include a sticker that indicates it meets standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Free bicycle checks were also provided by the Bicycle Tree, a nonprofit group currently working to open a public facility to provide bicycle education, bicycle recycling, and do-it-yourself bike repair. For those interested in skateboarding, a skateboard demo was provided by Shred Ed, a local skateboarding company specializing in giving expert advice on how to ride a skateboard through our routines and exercises.

The Santa Ana Police Department also hosted a Bike Rodeo'a safe bike riding obstacle course and parents also learned about fingerprinting and child safety from the police department.

"We wanted this event to be fun and informative and we can't wait to do it again next year," said Macias.
