What is Dr. Dukan diet?

Dr. Dukan diet is commonly known as the dukan diet was introduced by the French Dietitian Dr. Pierre Dukan in France. He is the author of the now famous book "The Dukan Diet" published a decade ago. He began his career as a neurologist but later his interest developed with regard to the field of weight loss. He spent more than three decades studying in this area and helped people reduce their weight.

Acording to him our size is determined by the number of fat cells we are born with called adipocytes. The more of these you have the greater you will gain weight. Women have more of these than men. It is these adipocytes that make a usual diet less effective, because although their size could be reduced the process of dividing into daughter cells cannot be reversed. He then devised his diet plan that helped people to reduce weight and also helped to maintain that newly achieved weight. Dr. Dukan diet has four stages - attack, cruise, consolidation, and stabilization.

In the attack phase one is allowed to have only food rich in protein like meat, fish, eggs and no-fat dairy products. If one adheres to this plan you can lose up to 7 lb in five days. Oat barn and plenty of water is also a must in this phase. They help in overcoming problems of constipation and bad breath as a result of the protein diet. It is this phase that one loses most of their weight.

One enters the cruise phase once you lost the desired amount of weight in the attack phase. In this phase you alternate your diet between protein only diet and protein and vegetables each day. Although there are certain types of vegetables you should discard. Once you have achieved losing your weight to the desired level you move to the next phase.

The consolidation phase allows you to have the food consisting of bread, starchy vegetables, etc, in certain quantities that were a strict no-no in previous phases. This phase allows you to maintain the new weight even while taking the food you love.

In the last phase of the Dr. Dukan diet, the stabilization phase, you get back to your normal way of living for six days a week and then on the seventh day go back to the attack phase, that is, intake of protein only diet. This helps you to lose any extra weight that you have gained over the week, thereby helping you to maintain your newly achieved weight throughout.
