The Four Keys To Banner Design

A banner can be used to celebrate a birthday or special event; it can be used to cheer a team to victory or for a church or religious celebration

. How about creating a school-related banner announcing the upcoming carnival? Whether it's a hanging vinyl banner or a fabric banner, you should follow the four banner design tips below to create a banner that's perfect for your special occasion!

1. Graphics

Graphics can grab the attention of any reader if they're used in the right way. Based on your intended message of the banner, a graphic should accompany what is being conveyed. If you're celebrating a birthday party you may want to use an image of a cake or balloon, or if you're celebrating the birth of a baby, a stroller or teddy bear may be acceptable. Selecting the right graphic is critical and should not be the primary element over the message.

2. Font Styles

Fonts play a critical role in the message you're trying to portray. There are two types of fonts: serif and sans serif. Serif fonts have strokes at the top and bottom of the letters to lead the eye accross a line. Both Times New Roman and Georgia are serif font types. Sans serif fonts do not have the small finish strokes and should be used when information is of importance. Sans serif fonts work great for any place large text is used and can to easier to read headlines. Helvetica and Arial are good examples of sans serif fonts. Generally you don't want to use more than two type faces in a design for a custom vinyl banner or hanging fabric banner. Try combining a sans serif and serif font in your banner design for a more stylish look and feel.

3. Color

The use of color and contrast are equally important. When creating a vinyl or fabric hanging banner use a dark background and light text and graphics or a light background with dark text and graphics for best contrast. Make sure you you keep readability in mind!

4. Margins and White Space

When creating a hanging banner, it's important to leave an area of white space around the design to help the viewer remain focused on the message. White space should not always be considered "blank", it can be an important design element that enhances balance and can help create a classic or rich appearance.
