What is Boils? Treatment and Prevention

A boil also known as skin abscess. Boils are usually caused by bacteria named Staphylococcus Aureus which are generally found on the skin surface. A boil is a red, swollen, tender bump under the skin. It is a skin disease caused by the inflammation of hair follicles, thus resulting in the restricted accumulation of pus and deceased tissues. The symptoms of boils are red, pus-filled lumps that are tender, hot, and/or painful. A yellow or white point at the center of the lump can be seen when the boil is ready to drain or discharge pus. In a serious infection, multiple boils may grow and the patient may experience fever and swollen lymph nodes.

In many people, itching may develop before the lumps start to grow. Boils are most frequently found on the back, abdomen, underarms, shoulders, face, lip, eyes, nose, thighs and buttocks, but may be found somewhere else. Boils on the ear tend to be more painful, and can create shooting pain in the whole area when touched. Boils can be the consequence of a physical condition such as diabetes, acne, or severe dermatitis. They can also consequence from low immunity, irritations or poor hygiene. The best way to deal with boils is to prevent them occurring. Avoid getting tired and run down and make sure you eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Drink plenty of water (around two liters per day), don't drink too much alcohol and take some exercise. Use moisture and warmth to get rid of boils. Soaking the boil, if it's in a soakable place on your body, in hot water will help to relieve pain and draw the boil out. Patient education is an important part of the treatment of boils. Patients need to be warned against picking at or squeezing boils because of the danger of spreading the infection into other parts of the skin or bloodstream. It is especially important to avoid squeezing boils around the mouth or nose because infections in these areas can be carried to the brain.

Keeping your wounds clean is the key to getting rid of boils. The regular use of an abrasive brush (such as a loufa) often helps. It will help to break up oil plugs that build up around hair follicles. If your boils are indeed caused by the staph bacteria, one or more of your family members may be carrying the bacteria and passing it on to you without knowing it because the staph carrier often doesn't show symptoms. Home remedies for Boils also helpful. Garlic and Onions have been proved to be among the most effective home remedy for boils treatment among several other remedies.
