What Is The Best Age For Teeth Whitening?

What Is The Best Age For Teeth Whitening?

From a young age our teeth are bombarded with foods and drinks which will darken our teeth and these staining components exist in just about everything we place in to our mouth. This makes it very difficult to avoid the teeth from becoming yellow as we get older even with a sensible diet and good dental health and hygiene.

Teeth whitening will be useful for removing any staining from the tooth to help regain its colour and shine but if you have very creamy or yellow coloured tooth genetically then it is unlikely teeth whitening will make them white in colour but brighten them to their original colour.

Young people need to start whitening not before eighteen years old ideally because the tooth's pulp is developing and any younger you run the risk of damaging this important part of the tooth's structure. Also very young people are unlikely to have really stained teeth less than eighteen years old and therefore little point in investing in whitening to see little difference afterwards.

On the flip side when we age, not only with the tooth get stained but will darken with general aging process and again teeth whitening will not address this in any way. The teeth will brighten but not whiten and therefore expectations need to realistic on desired results.

Any improvement to the teeth's colour is always going to be a positive thing for our smile but when we think about teeth whitening we are thinking about extremes and for many people ending with this ultra glow in the dark white teeth in not going to happen! More likely is a brightening and changing the teeth to a milky white colour which looks refreshed and clean but not veneer bright white!

To date no studies have proven teeth whitening to be dangerous and therefore being sensible and doing something with the teeth little and often is the best approach to maintain a year round whiter clean smile.

Treatments like zoom, power or laser whitening which take one hour to perform and offer instant results can be good for many people to enhance their smile and for deeper staining then the bleaching trays might be a better option. Very young people will be able to use a milder product like the whitening tray kits or the whitening strips made by crest as these are milder but need to be used regularly as a result to see any tangible results.

Older people might consider the bleaching trays as these will get deep in the dentin of the tooth and really make an improvement to the smile but either way ensure good dental health is not overlooked at is no substitute for having a whiter smile. Good luck in getting a new smile!
