How Much Money Does A Dentist Make

Dentistry as a profession is well known for being well paid. As with any other profession, the amount of money a dentist makes is defined by a variety of different criteria. Unlike other professions that pay specifically based on the experience of the individual, dentistry is different as experience is not necessarily the most important factor. The location of the practise. The services and specialisations offered (in accordance with the dentists accreditations) and the type of practise all make a difference to the dentists overall salary.

General

Dentists in the UK salaries vary quite dramatically depending on the criteria listed above. Usually they start at around 60,000 for an associate dentist however in 2009 it was reported that the average NHS dentist salary (pre-tax) was over 100,000. Private dentists have the potential to earn considerably more than this depending on the type of practise and specialisations. It was reported in the US that the average dental salary was $120,000 a year with the highest salary going to those that work emergencies and take patients at weekends.

Specialisations

Of all the specialisations in dentistry, cosmetic dentistry is well known to pay considerably better than the others with salaries reaching up to $500,000/year in the US and 300,000/year for private cosmetic dentists in the UK. There is however other specialisations that pays well with orthodontics coming in second and endodontic third. Both of these however are estimated to pay roughly half of what cosmetic dentistry does.

Location

The location of the practise has a massive impact on the significance of their earnings. The US is well known to be particularly well paid with areas such as New York and California being the most expensive. In the UK private practises in London are also renowned for their quality and price. However, as you move further away from London, the number of people diminishes (and the salaries they earn) therefore the potential for earnings does also drop. Places such as Cornwall are examples of this. There has also become a culture of people going abroad to places in Europe as they are known for being significantly cheaper.

As mentioned previously the pay scale of a dentist is little affected by their experience. A survey completed by PayScale.com highlighted this. Their surveys showed that salaries changed only slightly with experience. Recently passed dental school graduates would make approximately $98,000 a year, whereas dentists with a further 20 years experience would make just under $130,000 a year, less than $32,000 more for the further 20 years experience.
