Teeth Scraping may help do a more thorough job of eliminating plaque build up. The only way to determine if you will be guaranteed healthy teeth and gums, is with regular dental checkups, which include X-Rays and cleaning. After the cleaning if tartar remains which is plaque build-up, this can be a very serious issue, and one that can cause extensive damage to not only your teeth, but to your physical health as well.

Teeth Scraping is a procedure that is used to remove the plaque that is lodged in the pockets between the teeth, and under the gum line, that normal brushing and flossing will not remove. Teeth Scraping will slow the growth of bacteria, help keep the teeth healthy, and stop the threat of periodontal disease. The word Periodontal is broken up into two meanings Peri- which means is around and Odontos - which means tooth. When there is the threat of advanced Periodontal disease, scraping is one of the ways to help lessen the advancement of decay. This is all caused by Bacteria that has inflamed the tissue in the roots of the tooth.

Some of the tools used during the teeth scraping process are as follows:

1. Sickle Probe - mainly used to remove stubborn plaque, and to detect tooth decay, but has been known to scrape the tooth enamel

so is used very infrequently.

2. Curettes & Scalers - Even though these are considered sharp instruments, there shape is curved to make it easy to get

around, behind and between the teeth. They also do not remove existing enamel, but do remove even the smallest bits of tartar.

3. Ultrasonic scaling - It is more advanced, but for patients with more sensitive teeth it may not be the best course of action.

Another important reason to have this procedure done, is not only the threat of gum disease, but also because the tartar build-up will cause teeth to discolor, as tartar makes the teeth more porous.

Teeth Scraping is a non-evasive guaranteed way to remove the plaque that normal brushing and flossing cannot remove, and is a very common dental practice.
