What Causes Tooth Loss?

Tooth loss is a devastating trauma especially if it happens to the front teeth because the world sees a person, and sometimes measured him or her by the whiteness and presence of a beautiful smile. However, tooth loss is just not something you stress over because you wont be able to smile or laugh openly. Teeth are important to us because it helps us eat and chew our food properly so that we do not get indigestion.

As such, when tooth loss happens because of an accident, its a shame but something you have to accept. On the other hand, if the tooth loss is due to decay from improper dental hygiene, then it becomes a pity - because it could have been prevented.

The reasons why we suffer from tooth loss can be narrowed down to these causes:

Aging

As we grow older, our teeth naturally gets stained and yellowish. You can use whitening agents to prevent this, but they are artificial means, and can actually do more harm than good if done improperly.

Wrong Hygiene

You may follow the standard brush your teeth at least once in the morning and once before sleeping. Dont automatically assume that this will prevent tooth loss because it is not just the act of brushing that needs to be done, but the manner by which you brush your teeth.

There are those that think that by using mouthwash or rinses, they can get away with brushing less, and this turns out to be their downfall - at least for their teeth. If you are lazy about brushing and flossing, you should make it a point to have a professional cleaning once a month.

Gum Disease

This is different from gingivitis which is when your gums start to bleed from plaque build-up. Gum disease is the natural progression of gingivitis if not treated properly. It happens when infection sets in because there is a space that opens up between the gums and the teeth, and bacteria settles in there. It ends up as an infection and loss of teeth.

Bad Nutrition and Unhealthy Lifestyle

Eat sugar, drink sugary beverages, sleep without brushing and flossing, smoking, biting on hard candy, and non stop eating all can lead to tooth loss. Ideally, you should brush after every meal or snack but this is not possible most of the time. Thus, what you can do is avoid the sugary drinks and keep drinking water to flush out the food that could have been left behind.

Tooth Grinding

Many people grind their teeth at night, and if you are not aware if you do or not, ask your dentist to check. Dentists will also be able to advice you about the right methods to prevent grinding from damaging your teeth like the use of a night guard.

Accidents or Trauma

This usually from contact sports or by bumping into something hard with your mouth open. When it happens, you can try putting some ice to stop any bleeding, but if the tooth comes out, it might not be possible to put it back in.

Lack of Insurance or A Tight Budget

Money, or the lack of it, can cause tooth loss indirectly because of failure to have regular check-ups, buying the right toothbrush, floss, and other dental essentials. You should think about the expense if you do not have your teeth checked regularly, instead of worrying about the expense of dental visits.
