What Are Bucket Trucks Anyway?

Bucket Trucks are also known as Cherry Pickers or Zoom Boom

. These extended crane like trucks with a platform or bucket on top help suspend a person to a specific height to whatever means you may need its use. The term cherry pickers originated form as is helping people pick cherries in an orchard. Since then however several uses have been thought up for use in other areas such as telephone, cable television and electrical poles until today. Controls are also available on both the bottom part and the bucket where you may use the duplicate controls to hoist yourself up on the work area.

Bucket trucks and its other variations are known all together as Aerial work platforms or Elevating work platforms depending on the usage and setup. Zoom Boom, Cherry Picker and Boom Truck are regional terms for Aerial work platform while another term which is the Scissor Lift is the North American term for Elevating work platform. Mainly the uses of bucket trucks are for temporary, flexible access purposes such as maintenance and construction work or for emergency purposes on fire trucks for easy access. There are two types of bucket trucks that are the most common. AWPs resemble crane mechanisms closely because of jointed sections that can be controlled to provide adjustment for maximum lift.

The other type of bucket trucks that is also widely used is the Elevating Work Platforms or most commonly known as scissor lift is one type of platform that moves vertically. The mechanism uses folding supports in a criss-cross pattern linked to each other. The contraction of the scissor action can be hydraulic, mechanical or pneumatic. Some versions may require no power on decent but a simple release on hydraulic or pneumatic pressure may do trick.

AWPs are often bought by equipment rental companies who rent them out to construction companies or individuals who require their special uses. Commercially, there are several bucket trucks for sale in the market that range from boom trucks, crane trucks to forestry trucks. Some variations of hydraulic trucks may also be seen such as digger derricks and digger derrick trucks.
