This phenomenon has less to do with the diets themselves, and more to do with the "dieting" mentality. Departing from your normal, unhealthy way of eating to go on a quick-fix diet never works, even if the foods are healthy.

For example, say you switch from fast food, sodas, and boxed lunches to homemade lean meats and vegetables. After a few months of eating like this, you might get down to a comfortable weight. But what happens when you go back to eating poorly? Your weight shoots right back up! You can't expect to maintain your ideal bodyweight while still eating junk.

Packaged "Health" Foods

"Healthy" is an unregulated and confusing term, and the food industry takes full advantage of the confusion. Go to any grocery store, and you'll see hundreds of processed foods with words like "healthy" and "nutritious" in their titles. People with weight loss problems often buy these products in the hope that they will be great for weight loss but they never are.

Most packaged foods are full of processed flours, sugars, and other unhealthy additives. Even if they are in low in calories, they are garbage when it comes to healthy eating and weight loss. Skip the Weight Watchers snack cakes and buy some fresh produce if you really want to lose weight.

Shakes, Bars, and Meal Replacements

There are many companies which manufacture protein shakes, nutrition bars, and other meal replacement products for people who want to shed body fat. While these supplements are convenient, they are no substitute for healthy, home-cooked food. Like other packaged goods, they are often loaded with sugar. They are also devoid of vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients you can only get from eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

Starvation and Skipping Meals

One of the worst things people with weight loss problems do is starve themselves. While it's true that you must eat fewer calories than you burn to lose weight, skipping entire meals is a recipe for disaster. So is eating tiny amounts of food with almost no caloric content.

This is because your body is adaptive it regulates its activity levels according to how much (or how little) you eat. Eating a super low-calorie diet might work for a few days or weeks, but eventually your metabolism will slow way down. You'll feel sluggish and irritable, and you won't even have any pounds lost to show for it.
