One of the hardest things about going on a diet is giving up snack foods. If you have developed the habit of snacking while you watch TV or read on the computer, it can be nearly impossible to give them up. The good news is you don't have to stop eating snacks. In fact, eating between meals may help keep your blood sugar levels stabilized and your metabolism revved up. Of course, you have to eat the right foods and remember; even though it is a snack, you still have to count its calories.

If you are craving something sweet, try eating some fruit. Be careful though since some fruits are high in calories and natural sugars. A handful of berries or grapes may be enough to satisfy your sweet tooth and keep you from reaching for a candy bar and would certainly be the healthier choice.

If you want to enjoy a snack while watching a movie or football game, try some air-popped popcorn. The hot air makes the kernels pop so you won't have any fat and added calories. If you need something to make salt stick to the popcorn, use a calorie free spray. Spray on just a small amount so the salt will stick and you'll have a satisfying snack that won't derail your diet.

Raw vegetables are an excellent snack because they are nutritious, rich in fiber, and low in calories. However, it is a good idea to mix them up so you don't get bored with them. You may like celery sticks now but if you force yourself to eat them every day, you'll grow tired of them and soon be reaching for the chips. Alternate celery with carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, and any other veggies you like to eat raw so you have the ultimate in variety to keep your taste buds happy.

You don't have to eat your veggies plain all the time. You can dip them in fat free cream cheese, peanut butter, yogurt or applesauce. Just be sure to measure your portions and count calories because they add up quickly.

Chips are laden with fat and not a good choice when you want to lose weight but if you crave them, you should at least switch to baked chips and limit your portions. It is better to substitute pretzels, dry whole grain cereal, or even whole grain bagels.

Just as you are careful with the foods you eat for snacks, you should also be careful with the beverages you drink. Sodas should be eliminated since they add an absurd amount of calories to your daily count and have no nutritional value. While juices do have nutritional value, they are high in calories and should be limited when you are trying to lose weight. The best beverage for weight loss is water and you should be sure to drink plenty of it throughout the day.

You don't have to go hungry when you are on a diet but you do have to make smart choices if you want to see progress on the scale. Calories in snacks can add up quickly so choose your snacks wisely and limit their quantities.
