Exmoor National Park, in the south west of England, is a popular destination for adventure holidays because of its hundreds of trails and variety of terrain. From the village of Dunster, which is also the location of the Exmoor National Park visitor centre, you can ride your mountain bike up to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor and be rewarded with the thrilling descent that follows. Horse Riding
If you're an experienced rider or a nervous beginner, short horse riding breaks are available throughout the country to suit all levels of ability. Short horse riding breaks typically last for two or three days. You can typically choose your own accommodation and how long you ride each day, whether it be an hour, half a day or a full day. All treks are supervised by qualified and experienced guides. Depending on your level of ability you may be able to practice your show jumping or simply go for a hack in the surrounding countryside. Cycling
If more traditional cycling holidays are what you're looking for, how about tackling a road cycling weekend through the six most famous mountain passes in the Lake District National Park. You can split the 122-mile trip through the Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardnott and Wrynose Passes over two days, but it still presents a challenge for even the most experienced riders. If you prefer something a little less taxing, you might like to think about cycling coast-to-coast across northern England, from Whitehaven in the west to Tynemouth in the east. The 140-mile trip follows the National Cycle Route across the country and is suitable for most levels of cyclists.

Of course, mountain biking, horse riding and cycling holidays are not the only options for adventurous weekend breaks. You might like to take a course in Bushcraft a la Ray Mears during which qualified professionals teach you traditional skills that allow you to survive in a wilderness environment. Many different courses are available at centres around the country. The UK isn't renowned for its snowfall, but if skiing or snowboarding is your thing, there are numerous dry slopes scattered throughout the country. You can hire everything you need at the slopes and receive tuition, one-to-one or in small groups, from qualified ski and snowboard instructors.
