Water Festival A Celebration Of Tradition And Culture

Water Festival A Celebration Of Tradition And Culture

Shedding its stodgy and boring past, Siem Reap is reinventing itself to be one of Cambodias hottest tourist destinations

. Keeping in mind to let the old in with the new, the still charming French shops can now be seen rubbing shoulders with luxury hotels and top notch restaurants. Having garnered a name for itself as being the epicenter of Cambodia, Siem Reap is making all the right moves while stepping into the 21st century with flair.

The water festival is one such tradition that has been kept alive in Cambodia and Siem Reap. A yearly festival that usually occurs in the month of November, its generally referred to by names such as Bon Om Thook, Bon Om Touk, or Bon Om Tuk. Its a three day celebration to commemorate the natural phenomenon of the reversal of the flow of water between the Mekong River and Tonle Sap. The reason for this is that the usual water flow from the Tonle Sap to the Mekong is reversed during the rainy season when the Mekong rises and overflows into the river which grows at least ten-fold. The end of the season is in November where natural order is restored again. Boat races, festivals, fluvial parades and fireworks usually take place during these celebrations.

The celebration of the Bon Om Tuk dates back into the time of the Angkorian King Jayavarman VII in the 12th century and was a way to start off the fishing season as well as paying homage to the river divinities. There are three ceremonies that take place that go by the names of Loy Pratip, Sampeas Preah Khe and Auk Ambok. All these take place throughout the day and well into the night where people gather around the temples to consume Ambok or flattened rice as it is called. The people of Cambodia take this celebration seriously; workers are given holidays and schools are closed.

When looking for accommodation in a 5 star hotel Siem Reap one name that comes to mind is the Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor. A luxury hotel with state of the art amenities and exceptional services, its a hotel Siem Reap with a view to provide its guests with the best of everything.
