On the other hand, Germany is a country famous for precision engineering which makes the nation a cold perfectionist, not friendly enough for tourists. By area, it covers 357,021 square kilometres which makes it the largest country in Central Europe. Also, Germany is the continent's most industrialized and populous country.
The history and culture of German originates from the Germanic tribes and after that to the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. During a long period of time, German consisted of hundreds of small states. The first unification happened during the Napoleonic wars. Until 1871, under Prussian leadership, a vast number of separated German kingdoms were united to form the German Empire. This empire started to expand its territory and naturally its neighbours become the first group of victims. At that time, it occupied modern day Klaipeda (Memel) in Lithuania and also todays regions of Alsace-Lorraine in France, a small portion of eastern Belgium a small border region in southern Denmark and over 40% of contemporary Poland.
The empire ended when German was defeated in World War I and consequently Emperor (Kaiser) Wilhelm II was forced to abdicate the throne in 1918. Soon, the short-lived ill fated Weimar Republic was established. However, its efforts to start a liberal, democratic regime came in vain as the country was suffering different kinds of economic problems and disgrace for a humiliating defeat in the First World War. As a result, the Nazis, strong anti-democratic forces seized the power and successfully transfered common peoples attention from the ill domestic economy to continuous expansion.
In the year of 1933, the power of Nazi and its leader Hitler came to a rise. In order to realise its ambition of create a new German Empire, it launched wars successively with Poland, France, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and the United States. German achieved dazzling triumphs at first but finally was lost to the attack of the Allies and Soviets.
The history of the two World Wars is something that a German would not like to talk about definitely. Nowadays, Germans political and economic influence in Europe is undeniable. It is a member of the United Nations, NATO, G8, G20, and the OECD.
