Summary: This mockumentary explores the many different types of a modern family through the stories of a gay couple, comprised of Mitchell and Cameron, and their daughter Lily, a straight couple, comprised of Phil and Claire, and their three kids, Haley, Alex, and Luke, and a multicultural couple, which is comprised of Jay and Gloria, and their son Manny. These three types of families are being taped by a Dutch documentary crew who are using them for an upcoming reality-based television series due to air in The Netherlands. There was a lot of pressure for Modern Family to perform in its second season after the runaway success of its Emmy-winning first season. Sticking closely to the three-sitcoms-in-one structure that won it so much praise last year (one about a gay couple raising their adopted child, one about an older man and his young, beautiful Latina wife, and one about a nuclear family that constantly teeters on the brink of cartoonish chaos), Modern Family continues to balance frenzied slapstick with wit and heart, featuring one of the best ensemble casts on television. The show plays with the audience's expectations, taking common sitcom archetypes, like the effete homosexual, the dumb kid, and the loony foreigner, and turning them on their heads. Cam and Mitchell (Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson) both play to gay stereotypes and break them at the same time, especially Cam, who, with his paisley wardrobe and touchy emotions, counters Mitchell's assertion that gays always get picked last in gym class with a confident "I always got picked first. I could throw a dodge ball through a piece of plywood." The couple has even grown from seeming like asexual roommates in the first season to an actual romantic couple this season, kissing included.

'Modern Family' has picked up right where it left off at the end of its exceedingly successful first season, always the sign of a quality show. In this case, the show didn't come back with a "special episode' or one filled with guest stars. It simply told a Dunphy story, a Cam/Mitchell story, and a Manny/Gloria story. The only cross-pollination was Jay, which gave Ed O'Neill enough to do even if there wasn't a story for him. The stories worked to varying degrees, but it was just comforting to see the whole family back for a second go-round. Because of Ty Burrell's ability to play Phil as the funniest immature dad on TV, any Dunphy story is going to have some good moments -- even the iPad story. But his attempts to give Claire one last family memory in the old station wagon before he sells it had everything you'd want from a Dunphy story. The kids ragged on each other, Luke was dumb, Phil overestimates his selling skills (especially his use of what he called a "memonic"), and Claire tries to be sensible but her sentimental side shows through. "I love you when you're human," Phil tells Claire when she wants to keep the car and all of its memories; that was my favorite line of the night. Anyway, the sequence of mishaps in the car as they overlook the city reminds viewers how this show excels at physical comedy. Phil's reactions to Haley stepping on his belt (why was his belt on if they were parked?), especially when he spit his drink all over the dashboard, were priceless. It's always funny when Luke gets sick, this time asking for Buckety (what he used after puking in Haley's old Blankety). And Claire tries to stop the flow but just ends up dumping her drink on Alex. Even the sentimental ending -- a 'Modern Family' staple -- couldn't take away from the sight of Phil trying to stop the car from rolling into a ditch by climbing on the hood.
